The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group in Africa of semi-nomadic people settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania who have made beaded jewelry for many years. The group initially used materials such as copper, brass, wood, bone and clay then during the late 19th Century started using glass beads available via the European trade. To this day the Maasai continue to use glass beads in the creation of their necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry.
